Samantha M. Thompson is an artist and writer currently based in Bedfordshire in the UK. She explores themes of race, identity and culture through poetry, storytelling, figurative drawing, and printmaking. She is ultimately passionate about contributing more nuance and variety for the representation of Black British people.
Thompson’s art is meditative. Once she has chosen a subject, she commits to drawing them with the most attention. She spends hours drawing portraits for viewers to slow down and take in all the details of the face, of their life. She aims to give those who are often overlooked their time back. Currently, stone lithography is the main medium in which she works. By blending a traditional printing technique with modern figures, she aims to reignite interest in the craft.
Her writing is explorative. Thompson writes stories to explore worlds, to stretch perspectives of what Black British life looks like. Her poetry is a lyrical conversation about experiences. However, she does not shy away from the more academic aspects of writing. Thompson also authors essays and articles on current social, political, and cultural events. She intends to continue multiple tools for expression and use them to the best of her abilities.
